N5bn Zamfara Gold: Provocation Taken Too Far By FG, Says IYC

Ijaw youths under the auspices of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have opposed the proposal by the Federal Government to buy gold worth N5billion from Zamfara State through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The IYC, in a statement on Monday by its spokesperson, Ebilade Efereke, said the deal smacks of injustice against the Niger Delta people whose crude oil and gas resource had been a major source of livelihood to the entire country.

The statement was titled, “Zamfara Gold: Nigeria Is Currently Sliding Into Disintegration: IYC Urges Federal Government To Restructure The Country Urgently To Avoid Anarchy.” Efereke said that oil and gas from the Niger Delta could not be for every part of the country while the Federal Government was purchasing gold from Zamfara State.

He stated that it was a provocation taken too far by the the Federal Government to buy N5bn gold from Zamfara State when the Niger Delta states were not allowed to control their resources.
