In Africa there is an unacceptable gap between electricity supply and demand, where 600 million people still lack access to reliable energy. Future economic growth and a booming population will only increase the continent’s energy demands. Africa is growing by an average of 2.7% every year. It is expected the population will double by 2050, reaching 2.5 billion people.

Reliable energy is essential if Africa is to stimulate industrial growth, boost wealth and create local jobs, both directly and indirectly. Planned renewable energy projects are barely keeping pace with Africa’s birth rate. I am not the first, and I won’t be the last to stress the importance of increasing Africa’s share of renewable energies.

Renewable energy sources have the potential to play a leading role in meeting the continent’s energy demands. Renewables are more energy-efficient, predictable, and cost-effective in the long term. They offer a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels by reducing carbon emissions, thus meeting climate goals and improving our health.
