Total and Mozambique Sign Deal for LNG Project Security
According to a statement by the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy of Mozambique, Ernesto Elias Tonela, the government and Total have signed an agreement on security which will see the pair cooperate on security issues to protect the $23 billion natural gas project under development.
“This … bolsters security measures and endeavors to create a safe operating environment for partners like Total which enables their ongoing investment in Mozambican industry,” Minister Tonela said in a statement.
Ongoing attacks in the Cabo Delgado region have raised alarm bells for operators in the region. In a recent incident, the port of Mocimboa da Praia was captured by terrorists on August 12. Militants occupied this vital port in gas-rich northern Mozambique following days of attacks claimed by an ISIS-affiliated group, according to military sources and local media.
